Safari Concerns - Are They Overblown?

I’ve certainly had my opinions on the iPhone lately. And from what I understand, this compatibility with the iPhone is the only compelling reason to run the Safari browser. But today, we have a whole list of reasons why adopting the OS X browser in a Windows world makes less sense than originally thought.

To be honest, only half of the reasons given really strike me as valid. Cosmetic nonsense and other petty reasons not to use a browser mean very little to me personally. However once we come to the points regarding the browser’s resource usage and security concerns, I must admit, they do present a convincing point. If a web browser is chewing through your PC’s resources and is also a huge blemish on your system’s current security scheme, it definitely would make most proactive users wonder where the benefit is from using this application.

What do you think? Are we simply seeing more FUD regarding a perfectly safe OS X application being ported to the PC? Or instead, should potential Safari users think twice about installing the browser on their PCs? You be the judge.

I read the article early this morning and thought it really wasn’t worthy of ExtremeTech. You’re right, cosmetics are not worth carping about, but I did think the cosmetics with regard to usability was a good point, as some who use Windows, and get hold of something that doesn’t work as expected will either think the program is broken, or freak out, thinking they have done something wrong.

I tried it in the wee early hours of the morning and found it exciting, … for about half an hour.

I use a lot of weather sites and have them tabbed in IE-7 and FireFox. Since IE-7 was slipping in security a while back, I had opted to set FF as my default, but when the 2.0.0.4 came out and sacked my processor, I realized I could not handle that much power drain. Additionally, the tabs actually become jittery whenever I put the mouse over them - scary!

I then downloaded the newest from Opera as soon as it was given some press (couple of weeks or so ago), but found it woefully inadequate for the weather videos from AccuWeather and Weather.com.

When I started with Safari, it was fast and easy, but it constantly demanded that I use Apple resources; QuickTime, instead of my Windows Media Player (which I find to be superior to anything else going - WOW, will that upset all those who think that I’m a died in the Digital M$ ba$her!). I finally caved and installed QT, … only to find that what I wanted from AccuWeather was the “AccuWeather Channel”, and that could not play in QT, but require(S)d) Flash. Too bad, because I could not get Flash to install to satisfy Safari. All the while I am receiving popups from Apple to Purchase QT Pro.

It took fewer than a few days for me to realize that Apple is still a great used car sales FORCE, and I have stopped using Safari; uninstalled QuickTime, and now must re-OS the machine because all those installations have slowed the poor thing to a crawl - - - I should have known/remembered from past episodes with Apple. Funnier still, I had actually entertained thoughts of purchasing one of those cute little iMacs in the thin white screen. We have a number of them at work and I thought it might be nice to get one, … or more, and run Parallel for my M$ stuff. After the sales FORCE they imposed on me, I’m staying away from them for another several decades.

The idea of porting it over to Windows is fine. However though, could there be a slight possibility of introducing security holes in the actual coding change? I wouldn’t compare 2 different browsers unless they are both running on the same system, same OS… If you do, your asking to be dissapointed..

What Do You Think?
