As you may remember from last time, we talked about the harsh feelings between Google and Microsoft over Google’s frustrations with Microsoft allegedly making it difficult for the average user to have much success with Google’s desktop search in Vista. Well as it turns out, it seems that Microsoft and Google are going to be working on getting this resolved quicker than I had initially anticipated. Or have they?

Personally, I believe Google will need to step up their efforts to promote the value of their off-line search. But then to be fair, I have been saying this since 2004. Maybe I am onto something here?

If one reads the announcements, the conclusions that can be drawn is that MS is willing to capitulate only because the government might otherwise step in to ’smite them down’ with fines. What is not clear is how well the ‘fixes’ will work. Apparently MS cannot stop, or be persuaded to stop, the service that competes with the indexing from Google, but simply puts it on ‘idle’. From the reading I’ve done, it means that CPU time will not be taken, but RAM will still be occupied by an unneeded process. So the system will not be working so hard, but will be otherwise bloated. Then, not to put too fine a point on it, bloatware is what MS is famous for.
