MPLS: The Truth Revealed
With MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching) fast replacing older technologies such as ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) and frame relay on networks, many enterprises are gearing up to transition their WAN (Wide Area Network) services to this new technology.
MPLS is a scalable solution that offers the ability to transfer data, voice, and video at high speeds. An alternative to the traditional data-carrying mechanisms which required users on one spoke to route data through a centralized hub in order to communicate with users on another, MPLS allows users to bypass the central hub to communicate directly. This method is especially attractive for enterprises with global operations.
Network World offers a helpful series of articles on migrating to MPLS, including a quiz to determine if the technology is right for you.
“Also ask about (and budget for) ongoing monitoring. Your carrier will assure you that the provider will monitor ‘everything you need.’ Trust, but verify — you’ll want tools of your own to keep the carrier honest.”
This is sound advice. Our very own Observer network monitoring and analysis tool includes the ability to isolate MPLS problems and measure performance before and after migration, as well as track Service Level Agreements using MPLS-specific monitors.
