Hi Matt,
Here in downtown Germany I need some English help, I have Windows XP home edition (okay in German) and downloaded Media player 11 (German) and now I only get sound no video, any ideas?
Grateful of any assistance, a Brit in Germany
Well Alex, it sounds like your video codecs are not installed for some reason. And for those who don’t know, a codec is shorthand for “code-decode”, thus meaning that these plugins help to decode the video or audio you are trying to watch or listen to. If it was me, assuming reinstalling the player did not help, I would head on over to this website and try installing all the codec plugins they offer.
Do you have an IT-related question? Perhaps you are just burnt out on writing on the walls with crayons? Whatever the comments may be, drop me a line, and you too can “Just Ask Matt!”

Rather than taking a wild stab in the dark like that, why not download GSpot, which will tell you exactly WHICH codec a particular video file uses?

Matt,
“Wacky Wonders With Windows Media Player”
The Problem that “a Brit in Germany” has is due to the fight between the European Union and Microsoft. Microsoft has crippled the media player “in the German version” so that it can be sold in XP.
I found this out when a friend converted a VHS tape to DVD and he couldn’t play it the “German version” with media player and I could “US version”. We tried loading other Codecs but nothing helped. Maybe someone else has a solution, but I haven’t found one other than using other players.
