E-Mail:

Just A Friendly Reminder…

Instant messengers can be fantastic tools, but as we have seen recently, they can also become serious headaches. This latest exploit has me feeling thankful on two counts: one, I do not use Yahoo! IM. And second, if I did, I would not be using the release that was so easy to exploit. Well that and I would likely be using Gyachi found for installation on Automatix.

Frankly, I believe that any IM usage is a mixed bag. Access to instant messenger oftentimes proves to be both a blessing and a burden. It provides a fantastic way to communicate on one hand and by the same token, it also provides a great way to waste plenty of time.

Should IM be banned completely? Can there be a balance in using these instant communication tools or instead, is trying to use them in addition to email simply too much for most people? I believe so, but this is merely my own humble opinion.

Should phones and post-its be banned as well?

My company is almost entirely telecommuting these days due to gas prices. We have each other’s home and mobile numbers. We have work and personal eddresses for each other. We all use Skype and Trillian and usually have at least 2 or 3 IM contacts for each person. Our team is based out of Northern California but we have people in Europe and Asia as well. We run 24/7 depending on schedule demand and I can’t imagine not having multiple ways to get hold of one another. We tend to have more fun together than most families and definitely keep in better contact.

There is nothing wrong with IM, it is just a question of how it is used. Mine is always on and always available. IMs pop up like phone calls and I deal with them when I get to them. If we need something for long term, we email about it. If it is delicate or difficult to understand we call one another or schedule a day in the office for those effected. If we want to quickly ping one another to see where they are or get a quick thought out of them, we use IM. More tools in the basket make telecommuting a very tenable reality.
