Tweak It Until It Hurts – Ubuntu Login Crash

Over the past couple of weeks, I have had a few people emailing my Gmail addy and asking me about a common issue that they have been experiencing. You may have seen this yourself: an alert box telling you that the “greeter application” has crashed. Today, I am going to tell you how to fix this.

More often than not, this happened after you decided to tweak your login settings in some fashion. You know, heading over to your Login Window settings and toggling on and off a few things. Well to fix this problem, is actually rather easy. Just follow the instructions located here at the Ubuntu forums. Make sure you do everything step by step and you ought to be just fine. Yup, that’s all there is to it.

    Ive installed ubuntu 7.10- four times on 2 separate machines,can’t get past the login screen.I have not tweeked anything, I can’t get in, I’ve done the man sudo_root have to hit control alt delete to get out of it then ugh!!back to the login screen.Type in user name then password type in sudo passwd root get prompted for sudo password. Nothing works here but the user password then prompted for new unix password. I’ve typed in new passwords,tried user password. screen just displays You’ve updated your password successfully.Then I wait expecting a bootup. and wait, now i’m expecting a message saying please wait,but no.From here I’ve tried everything BELIEVE ME EVERYTHING!!! I’ve built at least 50 new computers have installed Windows 98-2000pro-2000 server-2003 server-2000 adv. server-M.E.Vista-linux red hat7.2 red hat9.Believe me 20 or 30 old pre historic machines.I’ve spent my time in the trenches,I don’t believe all this is necissary. Don’t mean to go on and on and I don’t quit easily but i’ve been on this for 2 FULL days and I feel really dumb.Please could you help me…Thanks Roy

    … assuming that Google Voice works as described in your country. It doesn’t in Canada, for instance.

    Yeah, google voice is very easy to use. You can send SMS via it.
