No Rush For Vista Just Yet

Not too long back I made the claim that any enterprise move to Vista was going be lackluster at best. Sure enough, enterprise migration has been off to a pretty slow start. Much of it has been claimed to be security oriented, however I believe more than that, it comes down to the OS not being as “ready for market” as XP is.

Security concerns aside, XP will work – period. Whatever the need, the enterprise user knows that their hardware will work with the proper application of a driver to meet the needs of the hardware required. But with Vista, there is still some hesitation. While most big name companies have drivers ready, there is still some reservations about compatibility bugs that may have not been discovered just yet. Speaking as an ex-XP user, it would certainly put me off on the migration, that’s for sure.

With so many questions remaining as to what will work and what will not, I would tend to agree that waiting until the OEMs begin to flood the market is likely going to be the best course of action. That and sticking with the OS that has an active security suite might not be such a bad plan either. Last time I checked, no one had a security suite out of beta for Vista just yet. Perhaps this has changed as this was written some time before it was posted, but I really doubt it.

They were ready for us with RTM version early December, when we started installing Vista Enterprise Edition on selected staff PCs.

Thanks Kenneth, good to know. But seriously, if me subscribing to over 200 RSS feeds did not hear about this, then someone’s PR team needs to be smacked. ;)
    Specifically, Sophos

On the other hand, I queue most articles way ahead of time, so this could also be the reason as to the lack of discovery, too.
