Ubuntu Tutes On The Way!

  • No Related Post

Well I asked and wow, did I receive a response:

Vin: More Linux info, please! I’m a registered Microsoft partner but the
world doesn’t “live” on Windows alone.

Jerry: RIGHT ON WITH THE LINUX!

Mark: Please continue working with Linux and posting the information. I am very interested in making Linux work. The articles that you are posting will help many to make the switch.

Chris: I’d definitely be interested in reading your proposed Linux tutorials. I’m currently running a mix of Windows XP and Ubuntu Linux on my machines, and am slowly moving towards the Penguin as I learn new things. If you know of anybody who can do a decent tutorial on Wine, I’d be particularly interested in that. (There are a few must-have Windows applications which I haven’t quite weaned myself from yet.)

Paul: I appreciate your Linux work. I’ve struggled through some of what you listed (multimedia codecs) but not Flash or Y! messenger).

Tony: After trying Vista Beta, I feel I would like to get away from Windows. I have tried several Linux setups on a couple of computers but one thing that has stopped me from using Linux full time is a good tutorial on getting more than the system up and running. I would like to learn more about getting additional features out of Linux and getting links to this in a your newsletter would be great.

Kevin: Please share what you know. I have Ubuntu on two computers and XP on another. I was really surprised at how easy it was to put Ubuntu on my machines. The Ubuntu distro found all of my hardware, DSL connection, and downloaded all the apps it needed for updating the distro. It seems that, at setup time, all I needed to do was type in my name, password, date, and time, and if I wanted client or server setup. It sure went smoother than XP! So go ahead and share your knowledge.

Jim: Matt - I’d be most interested in switching to Ubuntu (Dapper Drake, or is Edgy Eft in release?) on my HP NX9010. I have undertaken a CPU upgrade on this machine, from 2.66 Celeron to 2.8 P4, and while it is an older machine, I believe that going the Ubuntu route can give me a couple years of more useful life.

In my office, I am trying to expose some of my young interns (15 altogether) to non-MS computing using some older hardware (p3 etc.), but I haven’t yet taken the plunge to switch my personal notebook.

Any guidance you can offer in this respect would be most welcome…

Alex: Please proceed with the Ubuntu support drive. I’ve already got the Flash 9 part covered, but the things you’ve listed are seriously hampering adoption by mom and in-law, so please keep them coming. I do really want to stay well away from the Vista thingy and keep my beloved ones away as well.

Well needless to say that I have heard you and will begin putting things together come the start of the new year. I will also be making sure that real world examples of hardware manufacturers that support Linux without the bull are featured too. Well, that’s if for me. I will be back on December 26th. Have a Merry Christmas and for the rest of you, a great weekend!

I run WinXP Pro and Liranet 3.0, would like a tutorial on wine. I have been trying to Google info, but, so far am unable to understand what I have found. Thanks Tom

Have been running Ubuntu Dapper Drake on my Apache web dev server for two months now, and went with the desktop version with server apps loaded out of curiousity instead of the pure server version to replace the Redhat Distro I was running before. Wow, between Open Office and web support, you can actually do useful work with this thing. Started messing around with a Hauppauge PVR350 and MythTV, I might just have to get a little Mini-ITX box for the stereo system. With all the Adobe stuff on Mac, you can truly run a Unix/Linux shop and have a Windowless world. Hmmm. “Vista, the view you get before stepping over the edge of the cliff.”

[...] Man, I can hardly wait until tomorrow! As promised last month, I will be posting the first in a series of articles that will quite literally get you running Ubuntu or one of its derivatives like a pro. Stand back and be amazed as I introduce an Ubuntu-based distro that not only has the following installed by default: better wifi support than anyone else, the ability to beat down any .cab or .exe that is keeping you from using Ndiswrapper to extract hidden Windows Wi-Fi drivers, Flash 9 beta 2, every codec you would possibly need, and a real network manager (lacking by default in traditional Ubuntu), but does so with one simple installation. [...]

[...] On a side note, expect to see the first batch of Linux tutes coming out after January 1st. [...]
