SuSE 10.2 – Will It Be Better Than 10.1?

I am a very happy Linux user, but am also aware that Linux is not for everyone. Having said this, I was a fan of SLED 10. So it’s not like I am anti-SuSE by any means.

When I heard that SuSE 10.2 had come out, naturally I was curious. Has it overcome some of the shortcomings that I had seen with 10.1? You know, like how painfully slow installation of 10.1 installation is (on a brand new AMD 64 box), how running updates offers a never ending list of retrieval errors (on three different installs), and so on. Yes, overall YaST package management blows.

Why not just stick with the older version that works? Besides that, why would I need to look at SuSE at all? A user could just as well select Simply Mepis should they desire a newbie friendly distro or even better, consider Ubuntu along with a healthy dose of “Automatix”?

Eh, maybe I am beating a dead horse here. If SuSE is your bag, then go for it. But as it stands now, I have seen zero reason why I would want to partake in the RPM nightmare once again. Debian package management has never let me down. So considering that, I just can’t see myself getting too excited with this new release.

Think I am nuts? Fair enough., Those of you who have had good experiences with SuSE 10.2 specifically are encouraged to share your thoughts in the comments area above.

I may download a copy to play with in VMWare, but otherwise I’m a fair Kubuntu follower for the moment. ;-)

I agree with you regarding the 10.1 suse it sucked. but when i downloaded the 10.2 v it was 360 degree turn to me . They it made simpler and way better and non of the update error. it is worth looking…

hi my name is art. I have been fiddling with a few linux distrobeooshuns
for a while now . I use a dell inspiron 1150 as my main machine (all i can afford) and with the few distos i have tried it works fine Except for the wireless cards ( I have two belkin f5d8010 and linksys wpc54g)
i did get the wifi workin for only two sessions with Mepis .
I have tried puppy ubuntu linspire suse 10.2 knoppix (2 different versions)
and fedora core. I like linux and if i did not absolutely have to use wifi (because cable company won’t bring it to my house) I would definitely give that expensive windows the boot .

I have been using SUSE 10.2 x86_64 for over a month now, and feel this is the best distro I have ever used. I liked it so much that despite being a primarily Dos/Win user for about 20 years, have now migrated completely to it. Even used Vista for 3 months.

There will be minor issues with every distro, but a solution is available for every problem. I have had very few issues with SUSE 10.2.

The Yast is vastly improved from 10.1, but it does need further improvement. Apart from that, this is what a Linux distro should be.

What Do You Think?
