Isn’t It Great When Devices Work The Way They Are Supposed To?

One of my clients had an old Compaq desktop that crapped out on him the other day. I’d actually upgraded it for him some time ago (against my advice, mind you) by adding RAM, a bigger hard drive and a clean re-load of Windows XP. The machine performed admirably during this time, but clearly its number was up. Although I didn’t perform a full autopsy, I believe the power supply was the cause of death. This came from the fact that the little LED in the power-on button was flashing amber, and the cooling fan on the power supply wouldn’t spin. So it was either that or the MoBo, or both.

Fortunately, I had set this guy up with a Maxtor OneTouch II drive almost a year ago and had the included Retrospect Express HD software set to automatically backup his desktop every night at 10PM. He had another PC to fall back on, a new laptop that he got this past Summer to use when he traveled. So I just installed the Maxtor software on it, plugged in the drive, and performed a restore. All his data was restored to his laptop with very little fuss.

There are many options out there similar to the Maxtor OneTouch family of external drives. But if you are in the market for a backup solution, give Maxtor a look (note that Seagate acquired Maxtor earlier in 2006, but they still maintain separate product lines).
