ERP (Effective Radiated Power)

The animated TECHTip Tutorial is available here.

Each antenna gain situation is different based on terrain, environment, receiver sensitivity, etc. That is, every 3dB of gain from the antenna equates to a virtual doubling of ERP [Effective Radiated Power].

A good rule of thumb is that for every one watt of ERP, the effective communications distance is approximately one mile. This also means that the gain of the antenna can increase the ERP which is why directional antennas are used.
