A LIM [Linear Induction Motor] is a flat rather than round motor. An electric current produces an magnetic field which accelerates the motion of the desired device such as a roller coaster.
As electricity creates a magnetic field or electro-magnetic force, it attracts (pulls toward) or repulses (pushes away) the rotator or shaft (rotating/moving object). 3-Phase electrical current is applied to the wirings controlled by a variable frequency drive controller.
The 3-Phase current can be applied across the windings using D [Delta] or Y [Wye] connections. In the D connection, the voltage is applied to each winding coil. In the Y connection, each phase is applied to across two coils. The D connection may be used for high thrust and the Y connection for moderate thrust.
