MySpace Pedophile Busted By Wired’s Kevin Poulsen

What is MySpace’s problem? Why is it that they cannot seem to put into place some way of checks and balances to ensure that kids are not being accosted by some sicko looking to molest as many kids anyway they can?

As MySpace continues to state that there is “nothing they can do”, we have Kevin from Wired who managed to nail one molester with little more than some free time and a 1,000 lines of code. I salute Kevin for proving a very important point and more importantly, enabling the police to deal with a repeat offender.

But seriously, what does MySpace mean that they cannot come up with an algorithm to spot potential danger? There are two very simple answers that would work fine, should MySpace care to step up to the challenge:

1. Start up an open source project based on tracking down sickos like the one mentioned above.

2. Require people under 18 to have private accounts. It may be low tech, but it’s also difficult to prey on some you can’t communicate with. It’s just a thought.
