We Want Examples, Matt

Today David writes in response to my recent Ubuntu article:

Why don’t you just give that info - what PC to buy for Ubuntu - in your next Lockergnome? And also, put it on your website?

My response? I could not agree more. However this is a long term project that I have been working on with just about every free moment that I have. See, the trick is that I really don’t want to simply point to one or two different motherboards and chipsets. Considering that overall, it’s pretty darn difficult to have component detection issues with a self-built system.

If you are working with HP, Dell, etc, then your chances are better than fair that you will run into some issues as they may be using some fairly off-base hardware. Granted, most these machines will likely be fine out of the box. However there are always those limited instances that become the trumpet call for those who feel that “Linux is just not there yet”.

But I digress. David, you have been heard and I am working on this. However I cannot dedicate enough to time to making this happen in the way that I want at this point. The project in the works is to be known as LinuxMinute.com and it will be a user supported blog dedicated to offering viable solutions to the common issues that new Linux users are facing: MSN webcam support, all-in-one printer support, networking with Windows made easier, VoIP calls to a Windows box without Skype or Gizmo plus a lot more. The idea is to take the hot air out of the given answers that you read about in the Linux forums, tag the content, index it, then offer it up in easy to digest bites.

Here, let me give you an example - what you say if I told you how you can make Bluetooth file transfers, sync a Pocket PC running Windows Mobile OS and connect to the Internet wirelessly with your notebook and cell phone? You say it must be maddening to do this in Linux, right? You might be surprised.

The biggest problem that I have seen is the way the information is presented. First off, a lot of what I have talked about can be found in the book Ubuntu Hacks. Still, there are other things that you will not find there, so this is where I am hoping to begin to put some pieces together for everyone.

In the end, I am hoping to pool my bookmark resources into something that will allow you to do ANYTHING on Linux that you can do on Windows. It sounds impossible, however I am thrilled to share that I am about 3/4 of the way there already. Yes, with the proper mindset and understanding, Linux can do more than you would have ever imagined. And believe it or not, it blows XP away with most drivers as well. Granted, there are some hardware challenges to be had. But take my printer, wireless card or even my freaking scanner to a XP box - I am digging for drivers. With Linux, not one drive was needing to be installed. Stay tuned…

What Do You Think?
