The PSTN [Public Switched Telephone Network] services connect to CPE [Customer Premise Equipment] such as a PBX [Private Branch eXchange] systems and key/hybrid key systems. Single Line telephones or POTS [Plain Old Telephone Service] use individual analog business lines.

TDM [Time Division Multiplexed]/Switched Time-divided fixed bit length channels.

The PSTN is a network of TDM circuits such as:

Digital T-1 Transmission Level One or DS-1 [Digital Subscriber Level 1] - 24 voice/data channels of 56,000 BPS voice/data and 8,000 BPS for signaling/control.

ISDN [Integrated Services Digital Network] - Primary Rate Interface - 23 voice/data B-Bearer (to hold) channels of 64,000 BPS for voice/data and 1 - D-Channel (data) of 64,000 BPS for signaling/control.
