Conceptually, Mobile IP works like this:

1. Agent (user) connects to IP [Internet Provider]

2. Agent disconnects and moves
3. Agent connects to same IP

Technically, it works like this:

1. Agent connects to IP

2. Agent disconnect and moves - saving IP address with FA [Forwarding Agent]
3. Forwarding Agent forwards packets to destination agent often called HA [Home Agent] with confirmation
4. HA (destination agent) passes IP to mobile agent

The key point is that IP addresses remain the same throughout the connection - such as desired in instant messaging.
