D-Link Router Alert!

Glad I own a Linksys router. That was my thinking when I learned about an apparent buffer overflow that was discovered in a number of D-Link routers. Unfortunate yes, but it’s better to know now rather than later.
So just how serious is this issue? Eh, I’d say that it’s serious enough. A change of password perhaps, maybe more. I suppose that most people are not too likely to run out and buy a brand new router to replace it, but still.
To most people, the real danger will likely come from the potential of discovering a new installation of modified firmware. If used right, this firmware could compromise your entire network. And then to make things really interesting, consider just how many D-Link routers are in use right now. I mean seriously, imagine how bad it could be if 1 out of 100 D-Link routers were some how affected? Yeah, that’s enough to make you stop and think…
Alright, so where does this leave the rest of us? Well, basically it should be serving as a friendly reminder that all of us need to take a few minutes and see if there happens to be a firmware update for our routers. Call me paranoid, but I would rather make sure that I leave as few vulnerabilities as possible.
