The animated TECHTip Tutorial is available here.
This is an introduction to the planning for QoS [Quality of Service]. QoS is not a single element or single approach. This approach was developed after many months of research but does not include all the issues required. This is more of a framework to begin a dialog. That is, QoS has many hundreds of elements to understanding, evaluating, and deciding.
QoS is really building a plan for QoS at all points. Think of everything in terms of QoS. Number four in the top ten areas is:
- Edge Zone QoS
- Coming from User Zone
- Edge Zone Management
- Coming from Building Zone
- Local servers/switches
- Coming from Building Zone
- Going to Access Zone
- LAN-MAN-WAN interface
- LAN [Local Area Network]
- MAN [Metropolitan Area Networks]
- WAN [Wide Array of Networks]
- Protocol “latency” Zones - Layer 2-3
- IP - QoS or no QoS
- MPLS [Multi-Protocol Label Switching]
- ATM - QoS “built-in”
- Constant/available bit rates
- LAN interface - 802.1p/q
- Security Access Zone
- LAN-MAN-WAN - firewall
- Remote - dial back, PAP, CHAP
- Password and challenge access
- Mobile access - “letting roadies in”
- Wiring Zone - SONET-DWDM - Layer 1
- Performance Zones - Layer 3-4
- Switches - voice/data
- Routers - voice/data
- Servers - load balancing
- SANs [Storage Area Networks]
