The animated TECHTip Tutorial is available here.
This is an introduction to the planning for QoS [Quality of Service]. QoS is not a single element or single approach. This approach was developed after many months of research but does not include all the issues required. This is more of a framework to begin a dialog. That is, QoS has many hundreds of elements to understanding, evaluating, and deciding.
QoS is really building a plan for QoS at all points. Think of everything in terms of QoS. Number three in the top ten areas is:
Building Zone Management
- Coming from Workspace Zone
- Going to Edge Zone
- Server-Storage Zone - Internal
- Performance Zone(s) - OSI Layers 5-7
- Server type(s)
- Clusters - “server farms”
- Load balancing
- Storage area networks
- Security Access Zone
- LAN through firewall
- LAN - virus scanning
- VO [Virtual Office] - home
- Mobile - “roadies”
- Wiring Zone - Inside Plant - OSI Layer 1
- SONET - fiber
- Copper - redundant/diverse
- Wireless, infrared
- Risers-closets - “last foot”
- Protection Zone - power
- UPS [Uninterruptible Power Supply] - mission-tolerable
- UPS + generator - mission-critical
- Redundant everything else
- HVAC [Heating-Ventilation Air-Conditioning]
