Building Zone QoS

The animated TECHTip Tutorial is available here.

This is an introduction to the planning for QoS [Quality of Service]. QoS is not a single element or single approach. This approach was developed after many months of research but does not include all the issues required. This is more of a framework to begin a dialog. That is, QoS has many hundreds of elements to understanding, evaluating, and deciding.

QoS is really building a plan for QoS at all points. Think of everything in terms of QoS. Number three in the top ten areas is:

Building Zone Management

  • Coming from Workspace Zone

  • Going to Edge Zone
  • Server-Storage Zone - Internal
  • Performance Zone(s) - OSI Layers 5-7
  • Server type(s)
  • Clusters - “server farms”
  • Load balancing
  • Storage area networks
  • Security Access Zone
  • LAN through firewall
  • LAN - virus scanning
  • VO [Virtual Office] - home
  • Mobile - “roadies”
  • Wiring Zone - Inside Plant - OSI Layer 1
    • SONET - fiber

    • Copper - redundant/diverse
    • Wireless, infrared
  • Risers-closets - “last foot”
  • Protection Zone - power
    • UPS [Uninterruptible Power Supply] - mission-tolerable

    • UPS + generator - mission-critical
    • Redundant everything else

    • HVAC [Heating-Ventilation Air-Conditioning]
