In response to my question about using OS X Or Windows Or Linux? One of which, was featured yesterday.

I am a Linux aficionado, but still use Windows from time to time because I miss some features in any distro of Linux, such as my TV card drivers, Webcam drivers…
I also fix Windows PCs for a living, so whenever I have customers’ PCs in my workshop’s network, I use my own PC as a file server, and somehow it’s so easy from Win XP to Win XP…
However, I am aiming for a mostly Open Source environment soon…
I love distro for older hardware such as Puppy Linux or Zenwalk.
On my main PC, I usually settle for Ubuntu…
That’s a sum up…

I just recently started dual-booting between Fedora Core 5 and Windows.
I used to be entirely Windows, but I had a friend install FC5 on his computer and I immediately fell in love with it. There are only two reasons why I still have Windows installed: I have several hardware devices that do not have driver support in Linux, and my 3D games run better in Windows, mainly because my video card has no 3D hardware support in Linux. That’s not to say, however, that they don’t run at all in Linux; Wine actually runs a lot of Windows software effectively. I just made many poor decisions in my hardware purchases. Other than that, Linux is my OS of choice.

I have three flavors of Linux plus XP Pro. I have to use XP Pro because the cad software we use is only available for windows, as is the shop floor software. I would switch to Linux full time if these apps were available in Linux. Both my computer grad sons like OS X.

Having used DOS, HPUX, Idris, Mac, Windows, and Linux, I would have to say that Windows is not a perfect fit for anyone. The only thing that Windows has going for it is its pervasiveness. There are no UI police for windows programs like there are for Mac and Linux, so the big windows programs all do their own thing, and sometimes will totally change the interface from one rev to the other. I am always trying to find programs for windows that work 1/10 as well as Mac or Linux programs.

In response to your essay on OS X, Windows, and Linux, people need to realize something. When they make comments like “everything is available for Mac”, they need to understand that in the real world most companies don’t just run off-the-shelf software packages. For example, where I work we have approximately 20 custom built apps. I don’t need to bore you with the details, but the fact is these apps just will not run on a Mac. The Mac users here must install a Citrix client and run the apps they need via our Citrix server. I’ve been hearing for years how Macs can run most anything that a Windows PC can, but that’s simply not true.
