It’s amazing what can happen when you allow the community to create the kind of content that they’d like to see. As a matter of fact, I believe that Firefox does a great job of illustrating this with their Firefox Flicks contest.

Unlike Opera or Internet Explorer, the Firefox crew understands that more often than not, you can use humor to poke fun at the problems that caused you to create your product in the first place.

For instance, let’s say that you developed a new kind of PC maintenance product designed to improve a computer’s performance. Unfortunately, getting the word out about your new software product is proving to be more and more difficult. Maybe this is where taking some of your promotional dollars and hiring a indy film crew to come up with some clever viral video ideas.

In many ways, I think that this would do wonders for all of those software developers working to differentiate themselves from other related products. When people think system optimization, it would be nice if they were think of you. Running a viral video with humor has proven results as both Google, Firefox and others have shown us time and time again.
