Start Your Own ISP?

While I may not fall into this category any longer, not too long back I thought it might be interesting to start-up and create my very own ISP. Not one that is based on dial-up access or even wires for that matter. No, rather one that would give my hometown a true competitive city wide wireless access option.
As reality set in and the regulations plus cost became self evident, that dream was quickly swept under the imaginary rug. As things stand today, there is a company that has managed to fill this need - although you never hear about them anywhere in the media for some reason?
But what about those of you who live in an area not yet touched by broadband? Is this something that needs to be looked into? Are you left with Satellite and dial-up Internet as your only viable options? If you can say yes to any of the above, then maybe this idea of starting up a Wireless ISP in your town is not all that harebrained after all?
Getting some information:
Below are some resources that I have come across in my research. Some of books and others are links to helpful articles. With any luck, you will find some resources to explore the possibility of starting up an ISP of your very own.

Wireless is diffucult to deploy city wide. What might be a though is simply deploying your own apartment complex wide or office wide wireless network and either charge by the user or charge the property owner for building the network. This by the way, is a very simple network.
Also, for those of you who may be looking to simply start your own ISP (broadband DSL) have a look at http://www.xilabroadband.com. So far Xila represents the easiest solutions I’ve found.
