Cellular-mobile, delivery, and automobile whip/rod/vertical antennas use the body/case of the object to create a virtual earth/ground to form a 1/2 wavelength antenna. That is, this type of antenna uses a 1/4 wavelength for transmission and reception and the other 1/4 for ground.
The effect of the ground or ground effect to create a reflection of the signal to improve omni-directional (all direction) transmission and reception desired by mobile devices.
