Cable Or DSL?

Has anyone really noticed a speed increase since Comcast increased the speed offered to subscribers? Ya, me either. Not that I am really complaining at this point or anything like that. But when you hear that we are supposed to be getting speeds of up to 6 megabits, you’d think that we would see the increase in a visual sense.

Unfortunately, unless you are gaming chances are slim that you will not really see any increase that is going to ‘wow’ you. So this begs the question: Should we really care whether or not we see speeds of 6+ with Cable Internet? I suppose it is nice when your whole family is surfing the Web.

But for the guy living alone, does it really apply? Sometimes I wonder why I don’t just roll over to DSL? The price is cheaper and we’re not sharing the network either.

What do you think? Am I nuts here? Is DSL just a better value than Cable? I think that I will hold off on my judgement and see what the responses are. Then, perhaps I will be in a better position to make a long term decision. Feel free to email me and share your thoughts on the matter.

Iswitched from cable to DSL and saved about $35 a month. I don’t see any difference in speed..except when downloading some files. I am quite happy with the service and love the price…$14.95 a month. Cable broadband would go out on me about once a month..not too many problems with DSL.

I too am comtemplating the switch back to DSL. I’m with Comcast and not so lucky to have an outage once a month. My outages are occuring weekly and sometimes every night. The reason I hate to switch is because of all the url and email changes that have to take place, email, etc. This and other things are what others who are in the same situation comtemplate … change.
BUT, if it continues the way it is going… Do I want reasonably fast speeds downloading sometimes? Or do I want another possibly slower speed, that works most all of the time?
If I drop cable all together and go DSL and Satellite will I be a happy camper. Or do I trade one evil for another?

Initially, I was a cable user. It was just great when it was first introduced in my area. Then it happened, others got on the BAND wagon and speeds began to look just like high double digit speeds of dial up especially just after school got out in the area. Forget that. Just as soon as DSL was introduced into the area I applied. I’ll never look back. I have both cable and satelite feeds into the house so the choice is there. DSL has been a solid 320 kps proven, all the time, anytime. It never changes, a bit slower than the cable link, but at its best, the cable in this area was never much faster. Now Cable may have improved since then, but I am at a comfortable price/speed range that I like. As far as service goes, I know you get to talk to people mostly on the other side of the world. It has been somewhat of a hassle when something goes awry but any problems were fairly well resolved. Other than the line “I’m sorry, Bell doesn’t support more than one computer connection at a time” continues to pop up in the conversations, it really hasn’t been all that bad.

What Do You Think?
