Too Little Reward With Too Much Risk?

When I first came across this article discussing a new service for TiVo users called CozmoTV, I was not really feeling too excited. As I read through the article I initially, nothing really struck me as new and inventive. Then I noticed something: The promise of combining both industry standard TV along with Internet video. - all on your TV set.

So rather than having to buy an Akimbo unit and finding yourself paying for content that you can watch for free over the PC, you can use http and bittorrent to achieve the same effect on your existing TiVo box.

Granted, we have been able to get Rocketboom on TiVo for some time now. But honestly, I’d rather watch DL TV and other video programs if given the chance. I like satire as much as the next guy, but learning something productive never hurt anyone either.

CozmoTV is certainly a cool way to add functionality to our TiVo boxes. Unfortunately however, there is a dark side that you may wish to consider before jumping into this with both feet. After doing some research, it turns out that you may in fact be opening yourself up to some potential security issues. In order to enjoy the CozmoTV service with your TiVo, you will be offering up both your email and password that enables full access to your TiVo account.

While I can’t speak for everyone, I think that I can speak for most people here in saying that we have a difficult enough time trying to keep our world secure without adding yet another headache to the list. Perhaps even with its expense, using something like Akimbo is a better long term solution? It may not be the cheapest route to take, but chances are your personal information is going to remain a whole lot safer in the long run!
