A New OS Order?

Over the past few months, the hoopla about Google buying everything in sight is really getting out of control. I actually heard of blog entries claiming everything from ‘Google buying up the healthcare system’ to news about ‘Google buying up real estate on Mars’!

Frankly, I think that the rumor mill has been working overtime. But there was one piece that caught my attention: The news about Google allegedly buying up Sun. Yes, I know this sounds insane. And yet if you think about it, there is a sort of ‘Googlistic’ logic behind that line of thought.

Think about it. If Google buys Sun, it would prove to be a huge time saver on the long road to a Google Desktop. And with the speculation behind Microsoft moving away from the world of Windows as we know it, things could be ripe for a changing of the guard.

To say that it would be interesting would definitely be an understatement. For the first time in recent memory, Microsoft would not be the king of the mountain any longer. Not so much because of a threat from Google. Rather because of choices they are making right now.

In the end, I am not all that sure how I feel about all of this. Rumor, speculation, whatever. The fact remains that powerful forces are at work and may one day change the way we login to our computers forever.
