OSPF - Get The Shortest Path First

The animated TECHTip Tutorial is available here.

In some cases, distant-vector and link-state protocol can coexist in the same router, each with its own methods and procedures for handling route lists or tables as well as packet (data) processing. Since this is a dynamically changing issue, check with the router manufacturer for specific details.

Note: Each of OSPF [Open Shortest Path First] message is a different message length-format-function:

  1. Hello - time synchronization and routing information - This measures the time (round trip ping time) to each router to compute shortest route based on delay and topology information

  2. Database description - network map topology (description)
  3. Link status request - “What is your topology?”
  4. Link status update - “Here’s my topology.”
  5. Link status acknowledgement - “Got your topology.”
