Google Ads - Are They Truly Evil?

OK, I know that we did the whole Google thing once already not too long back. But the guys over at TWIT mentioned something that really struck me: Google is in the ad business and not the search business. I don’t know about you, but to me this is a very provocative statement.

And yet if you think about it, there is a level of logic to that point. I mean, Google has an ad model that works and works well. Granted, Chris is spot-on with his statement about the overall ‘feel’ of Google applications.

What’s even worse, some folks are concerned about the fact that Google seems to be popping up in just about everything. Regardless, can we seriously call this a threat to any of us? The point is that we remain in control - period. No one is going to force us to use any app that we dislike. This goes for any product or service.

Each of us simply needs to remember that we have a choice. And if we disagree with the way Google is using their ads, then perhaps we need to stop using the software product offering them? Speaking for myself, I am not bothered by Google ads. Then again, I am realistic enough to understand that someone has to pay for development and bandwidth costs for applications that I like to use. After all, if costs are not being covered through ad sales in the product, then the alternative is obviously a pay-per use type of deal. Speaking for myself, I will wait for Google to clean up the apps a little more before putting any of my hard earned cash into them. Hmm, I suppose this is where those Google ads come into play…
