Measuring and controlling RF [Radio Frequency] signal gain is a critical part of securing a Wi-Fi network.
Two points are critical. First, Rogue AP [Access Points] can easily emerge. Sometimes called coming-out or inside-out network, radio frequency signals come out (radiate) from the building. Almost anyone can bring in their home Wi-Fi AP router and set up a Wi-Fi in their office area. Moreover, these Access Points may NOT have any security allowing War Drivers (hackers) access to the corporate network. Second, another type of coming-out network is where the antenna gain of the internal network broadcasts out (radiates) to unauthorized users outside the building.
TECHtionary Tip: Go to potential War Driving areas such as parking lots, city streets and neighboring buildings with a laptop and see if the signal reaches you. Then adjust the signal power gain on the AP to eliminate access. Another tip is to install APs aimed inside rather than aimed outward to windows.
