The Weird Side Of Tech

OK, I confess. You are reading content from a guy who is lost without his technology. How bad is it? So bad that he (speaking in third person) has to use the video recording feature built into his phone to create a virtual pathway back to the car after a trip to the supermarket! Yes, I am a truly tech-needy sort of fella. Some might argue this as a weakness and I might be inclined to agree, but for the right reasons.

First off, I am a control freak. That, and I am always seeking some level of speeding up what I am trying to accomplish. Take a trip to the supermarket for instance. When going over my grocery list, it is a guarantee that I will leave the cart (buggy for those in the southern US) at the end of the aisle so I am not having to navigate around those people who leave their cart in the middle of the aisle. You know the sort, they stand there looking all ‘profound’ as they read the ingredients on a bag of sugar.

Yes, some people I shop with find my habits quite annoying. But the fact remains that I can shop faster than anyone - checkout lanes willing. You might even say I shop like I am in training for the shopping spree of the century! Yup, I am a fanatic for staying on schedule.

One thing I learned early on however, is not to schedule any part of a date on your PDA type device. Seriously, there is nothing worse than having to explain to your date that you have to hurry up because otherwise you might be late for the upcoming LAN party! Not only that, women do not dig having specific romantic moments added to the itinerary of an alarm enabled PDA, either. I guess it does kill the romance when the guy hears his PDA alarm go off and then jumps up and down screaming; “It’s time, it’s time!” Conversely, this has proven to be even more of a problem when going out with someone you just met. Hey, don’t give me that look! The alerts just got mixed up. It was a left over alert from the year before - set on repeat.

Well folks, I suppose that I have managed to establish that it’s bad to mix obsessive compulsive behavior along with modern technology. While I have learned to make some adjustments over the years, I still rely too much on my Bluetooth headset. Sometimes I forget that people cannot always see my earpiece. That, and it gives the appearance that I am having serious technology debates with a variety of inanimate objects when I’m in public. One of my favorites comments would have to include; “Hey, did that guy over there just tell the parking meter to try restarting the computer?” Yes, it’s happened more times than I like to count…
