VoIP Bad Clock = Bad Phone Call

The animated TECHTip Tutorial is available here.

Clock Synchronization and Clock Drift can cause voice distortion.

If the clocks of the transmitter and receiver are too far out of synchronization, the transmitter may fill the receive buffer faster than the receiver can process the incoming packets. This is also called buffer overrun. Clock Drift can also cause packet delay and loss. Another problem with buffer and clock delays is that DTMF [Dual Tone Multi-Frequency] (touchtone) signaling is sent within the voice packets (called inband signaling) which could excessive delay or loss and cause the call to not be completed or disconnected. NTP [Network Time Protocol] (RFC-1305) is used to reduce these problems.
