Open Source Ideas For The Masses

Well, it’s official. It would seem the idea for creating a Lockergnome IT Professional Map via Frapper was a great idea, inspired by Ian’s efforts. After reading through all of the listings, I got to thinking; “What would it take to create a network of Gnomies in such a manner that ideas can be exchanged and PC problems solved?” Now, I am not thinking of a message board as that is already covered with Lockergnome’s help forums. And no, the blogs are already up and being used as well.

If such a contraption existed, a Gnomie with a question about something could create an alert that was automatically sent to other Gnomies with documented expertise in the area of the problem. Sort of like a network of Batman signals that only go out to those who are in a position to help with the problem at the time.

Let me explain this another way:

Gnomie #1 has a question in regard to video cards and compatibility. The need for help goes out to the subscribers on the list, but only to those who possess knowledge in that area. That way, those who are not vid-card experts would not have to deal with the list e-mail/RSS alert. See what I am getting at? What happens is that it becomes a mailing list (sort of) that only alerts people who might be in a position to help! Obviously, something would have to be in place that could look at specifically-made profiles and decide whether or not that person is in the ‘can help’ category for the specific need. Does this make sense?

If something like this already exists, I would LOVE to learn all about it. But unfortunately, all I am finding are message boards, chat rooms, typical mailing lists, and other Web 1.0 technologies. Eh, maybe the same thing will happen with this as my thoughts of podcasting with Satellite radio. Yes, I publicly announced a call to arms for that concept, a month or so later we had the Podshow with Adam Curry. Wild how this sort of stuff works out, huh? Then again, it was a freebie that I openly tossed out there… much like this idea.
