Evil Twin Captured While Phishing

This animated TECHTip tutorial is available here.

Wi-Fi attacks are becoming commonplace. Detection and prevention is critical. Here’s a security attack where the “Evil Twin” (hacker) is captured when the hacker goes “phishing” or wireless called “wi-phishing” and is detected by various network security devices. The animation shows how the hacker installs a “soft AP [Access Point]” (software turns a PC into access point) and pretends to be a valid access point (the hacker intercepts SSID [Service Set IDentifier] from valid access point). The “hotspot” Wi-Fi user connects to “Evil Twin” instead of valid access point. By design, the wireless device will automatically connect to the strongest RF [Radio Frequency] signal abandoning even a secure access point connection. The hacker presents faked web sign-in/login pages to the user. The victim enters personal data such as credit card info and the hacker captures keystrokes called “Phishing or Wi-phishing.” The hacker can also send viruses, worms or other malicious programs to the user. Then, the hacker can disappear like the wind.

The tutorial continues with another attack called “MIM [Man-In-the-Middle].” The remainder of this animated presentation is intended to discuss a range of Wi-Fi Security Issues.
