One of my favorite operating systems of all time was OS/2. Man, I loved that OS! It was so rock solid that I rarely rebooted. I was using it years before Microsoft came out with its 32 bit OS, Window 95, and it would still be years later before it had a comparable stable offering, Windows 2000.
But like so many other Warped users, I was forced to leave the good for the bad and had to install Window 98 due to lack of OS/2 applications.
Some die hards stayed on board with IBM, however, when IBM finally threw in the towel a few weeks ago on Operating System/2, there was a call by those die hards to open it up and let it reign once again. In the spirit of OS/2 2.1’s code name, Borg, I say to IBM, “Make it so!”
Martin LaMonica of CNET News writes:
“Customers that are willing to continue using OS/2 will get the benefits of an open OS that will be continuously developed by individual developers and/or software companies, their ownership fees will decrease and they will have the enhanced security of an OS that will continue to be relevant due to the open-ended nature of open source (following the BSD and Linux examples),” the petition states.
