To Teach Or Not To Teach!

Welcome to Just Ask Matt! Today, Tommy writes:
I am going crazy here! I am constantly being bombarded by customers asking me to train them on basic computer skills. I have shown them where they can take classes for this sort of thing, but am not sure if they want to go that route. Should I just break down and teach them myself? Or is this more trouble than it is worth? Some advice would be great.
While I don’t mind teaching a class of people who have some of the basic skills needed to check e-mail and update their anti-virus programs, working with complete and totally new users does not really appeal to me all that much. So as to your situation, I would look long and hard as to whether you feel that this is a commitment that you’re willing to make with the people asking for help.
The last thing you want to do is say OK and then back out when things get rough. My first thought is to say no to teaching, Tommy. If you have even a small doubt, then chances are apparent that you have already made the decision ahead of time. Good luck!
Do you have an IT-related question? Perhaps you are just burnt out on writing on the walls with crayons? Whatever the comments may be, drop me a line, and you too can “Just Ask Matt!”
