Kids And Curiosity

This is a pretty hectic point in my life. But I made the time to listen in to Chris’ show today and I really enjoyed it! Ever since he has added the ability to call in to the show LIVE, it just seems really reminiscent of the old TV days. If you have not had a chance to listen to the show, I’d encourage you to check it out next week or simply download the archived episodes.

Back on my side of the fence, I had a client today that is running XP Home on his old computer with a Pentium 2. He has 256 MB of RAM and to be honest, it is running better than I expected! Unfortunately, his son decided it would interesting to alter the jumpers on the motherboard. Not the greatest idea when you don’t know what you are doing. Then again, most of you already know this, I suppose.

So this leads to an interesting thought. Do we feel grateful as people in the repair industry or should we feel badly for the parents who end up footing the bill because of their kids’ curiosity? Speaking for myself, I have mixed feelings on the subject. While I stand firm that the tech should always be honest, you still have to balance that with common sense. Basically, don’t offend your clients by insinuating that their kids should not be fooling with the jumpers in the first place! As true as this may be, remember that it is all about how you present this to the client. I usually do a little ‘fishing’ to see how they might respond first. Sounds silly, but it can keep you from getting your teeth knocked down your throat.

Oh before I forget, apparently I have clients who read my column and my blog from time to time. Long story short, they e-mailed me asking if I was truly calling it quits on the repair business. So after a lot of thought, I have decided that I will continue until my ‘new business’ picks up rather than dropping it right now. I figure that once I get distribution up and running for my ultra-secret item, the transition should be pretty smooth. Something that you may not be aware of is that back when I was married, my wife and I ran a successful non-tech business for some time. This was a long time ago, but I did learn a lot about people, marketing, and how to blow the crap out the competition - hence my success with my repair biz, I suppose.

Well that is enough of my world for one day. The Weezy and The Swish podcast is being recorded this weekend and I will have my segment for them as well. After talking with Chris and Jake (along with 8-bit Jake), I’ve decided that my contributions to the podcast will have to be recorded here and then combined with their stuff. Being that I am doing the audio editing myself (and I really do a fair job for the most part), I will be using some of the advice that I received from today’s Chris Pirillo Show to make sure that Weezy and The Swish are offering a tremendous podcast to all who listen. Well, that’s all for today, see you next week!
