Today has, for the most part, been pretty run of the mill. Short of chasing after raccoons, I have been been doing little more than the usual ’stuff.’ But that leads me to thinking about something that struck me out of left field the other day. As people in the IT field, are we truly reaching our full potential?

Speaking for myself, I just discovered a way that I can literally multiply my tech-teachings a million-fold. If I decide to pursue this, I will be able to use one project that I am a participant in as a springboard to help launch this in a big way among non-geeks. For those who are wondering what I am referring to, I should be making the announcement right before Gnomedex. While that project would actually be the perfect vehicle for this product idea, I have concerns however, that it might take all of my time away from my repair business. I know that I said that I want to retire from it, but still…

Now just to be clear, I am talking about my idea being too time consuming - not the project that I am participating with. I am very much dedicated to that and will be working with some wonderful people as well. But the new ‘idea’ that I am considering could be a real time cruncher though. While success with this idea could mean a fair amount of extra income for me, I still want to remain true to my roots if at all possible. Regardless, though, my work at Lockergnome would remain untouched. That, my friends, is a separate commitment altogether.

So, this line of thought prompts me to ask each of you a question. If you knew that you could drop PC repair in exchange for a new, exciting way to generate more money than you ever could doing repair work, would you do it?

Anyway, in closing, I would like to hear what your experiences are in this area. Have you, or at least come close to, dropping your IT career for something else altogether?
