Hitachi Jumps Into NAS Market

It’s not exactly a crowded market, expecially when it comes to the small and medium business segment. So, we’ll consider Hitachi’s move to be welcome and a good idea, for them. Let’s hope that they do well. It might encourage a few more entries and some needed competition. The entire NAS market hasn’t yet seen the sort of push and shove that the home market is used to.

Hitachi Data Systems, which has to date focused on the enterprise SAN market, is today launching a major initiative into the network attached storage (NAS) market. And while today’s announcement is focused on the enterprise market, the initiative will extend into the SMB market later this year. The plan is to take up to 5 points of marketshare in the next twelve months, largely, of course, at the expense of NAS market leaders Network Appliance and EMC.

Today’s announcement involves next generation embedded NAS Blades for the TagmaStore platform. HDS intends to focus on capturing new NAS gateway and filer sales opportunities, consolidating all existing NAS gateways and filers in an enterprise environment and creating a common SAN and NAS data storage pool under common management.
