Welcome to Just Ask Matt! Today, Mick writes:
Matt, after much consideration, I have decided to give Linux a shot. No way am I giving up Windows altogether, but I am still going to give this Mepis thing a shot.
My question is whether or not I should bother with an anti-virus for my Linux computer, and, if so, which one is best?
Well, congrats on the decision to try something new, Mick. While Linux may not be for everyone, Mepis will likely make you feel right at home with its ease of use and reliability. Anyway, if I was in your shoes I would consider a program called KlamAV. I like this program as it is all GUI and pretty easy to use. Updates and containment are simple enough. You will likely find yourself right at home, as well. Installation instructions are provided and I hope this takes care of your needs.
While Linux viruses are insanely rare, this does not mean that you can’t pass something onto a Windows machine someplace. Besides, it is just nice to keep things tidy and safe, you know? I hope this both gives you the tools that you need and answers your questions.
Do you have an IT-related question? Perhaps you are just burnt out on writing on the walls with crayons? Whatever the
comments may be, drop me a line, and you too can “Just Ask Matt!”
