There are many objectives covered on exam 70-291 Implementing, Managing, and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure. You can view a complete list of the objectives on Microsoft’s Learning Web site.
One of the objectives you must be familiar with is Implementing, Managing, and Maintaining IP Addressing. The sub-objectives that are covered under this topic include:
- Configure TCP/IP addressing on a server computer
- Manage DHCP
- Troubleshoot TCP/IP addressing
- Troubleshoot DHCP
When it comes to configuring TCP/IP addressing on a server computer, you need to know that IP addresses can be dynamic or static. In other words, you can use DHCP to obtain an IP address or you can manually configure a static IP address. Keep in mind though that in a lot of cases servers are configured with static IP addresses. To configure a static IP address on a computer running Windows Server 2003:
- Right click My Network Places and click Properties.
- From the Network Connections window, right click the appropriate local area connection and click Properties.
- Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click the Properties button.
- Select the option to Use the following IP address.
- Type in a unique IP address, subnet mask, the IP address of the default gateway, as well as the IP address of the primary and secondary DNS server.
- Click OK.
If you plan to use DHCP, you need to be familiar with the Automatic Private IP Addressing (APIPA). If a DHCP server in unavailable, the computer will assign itself an IP address from the range of 169.254.0.1 - 169.254.255.254. The computer will only be able to communicate on the local subnet and only with other computers using IP addresses from this range.
Of course the best way to learn about configuring an IP address on a server is to actually have a computer running Windows Server 2003 in front of you so you can practice doing it yourself. When it comes to the exam though, be prepared to encounter more questions pertaining to installing and configuring DHCP than simply configuring an IP address on a server.
