Wi-Fi vs. WiMAX
Like most of us, I am a Wi-Fi user, simply because that is all I need. I am not sure how many of you have heard of WiMAX, but it is stated to be the future of wireless technology. The real question is: Which one is better?
As far as hotspots go, I think each has its place. Wi-Fi seems to work well for small hotspots with very short range, while WiMAX may excel at long-distance fixed links to backhaul hotspots, perhaps. WiMAX is mainly used for Wireless Internet service providers.
Let’s break this down into a list:
Frequency rates
Wi-Fi - 2.4GHZ or 5.8GHZ
WiMAX - 2GHZ - 66GHZ
Maximum Throughput
Wi-Fi - 2MPBS – 54 MPBS
WiMAX - 70 MPBS
Range
Wi-Fi - 200 yards
WiMAX - Up to 10 miles
Transport protocol
Wi-Fi - Ethernet
WiMAX - TCP, IP, ATM
Equipment costs
Wi-Fi - Few hundred dollars
WiMAX - Several thousand dollars
The real question is: Will WiMAX one day be the standard for wireless? Or will it stay only for wireless Internet providers? You be the judge.
