Special Effects Do Not A Special Movie Make

On a whim, I decided to pick up a copy of The Day After Tomorrow. When I first watched the previews for it on TV, I was convinced that it was about a super-being that went nuts because his Internet went on the fritz. Apparently I was way off, there. The true point to the movie is a warning about the dangers of global warming. As much as I enjoyed the movie, the science was not really that accurate. First off, I am not convinced that any of this would ever happen in our lifetimes. Besides that, I believe that many of the events that take place are designed to add cool special effects for the enjoyment of the audience.
Would I recommend it? Yes, I would, but only for the special effects. The plot was sort of cheesy and the acting was mediocre. Still, the movie did provide me with a way to kill a couple of hours of an evening. I bought my copy simply because it is one of those movies you can watch over and over. If I get tired of it, I can always trade it in for something else.
I find it fascinating how far special effects have come since the blockbuster movie T2 (Terminator 2). As the movies continue to cascade into a never-ending mess of chick-flicks, mindless gang movies, and other garbage, it is cool to still see the occasional movie with a happy ending.
