DUN Fooling Around With Dialup?

Welcome to Just Ask Matt! - The IT industry’s answer to the help column, only slightly more medicated. Today, Sam writes:

I am going nuts here, Matt! I keep getting booted off my dialup ISP, but I know there is nothing that I am doing wrong. I changed the phone cords and even had the line tested for line noise but nothing helps. If it is something in the DUN settings, I am familiar with them. I can make any changes you think will help. Any thoughts?

Well, Sam, I am willing to bet you money that you have call waiting. In most phone service areas, you can disable this service by setting your DUN to dial *70 before dialing into your ISP. Give that a whirl and get back to me. This is a very common thing to overlook, even by the most skilled PC users. Good luck!

Do you have an IT-related question? Perhaps you are just burnt out on writing on the walls with crayons? Whatever the comments may be, drop me a line and you, too, can “Just Ask Matt!”
