Spicing Up The IT Professional’s Resume

Competition is usually tight these days when applying for technical positions. This makes it more important for you to beef up your resume to make sure it stands out amongst all the others. There are a few things you can do to spice up your resume when you are applying for technology jobs.

First of all, include a specific section in your resume that highlights all your technical expertise. Call it what you want… Technical Experience, Technical Background… a reader is not going to want to go digging through your resume trying to find out what kind of technical skills you have. If they have to, they might just place it on the bottom of the pile and move on to the next one. Make it easy on the reader and put all your technical skills under one section or heading.

Us technology people are sometimes referred to as “geeks” without any interpersonal or communication skills. Employers are always looking for people who can interact with and work alongside others. When you are writing your resume, pinpoint some of your “people” skills and experiences that you have. Make the reader see that you have skills other than just technical ones. You are a person, and you are capable of working as part of a team.

A technology resume should focus on the end results. Instead of including every single detail of each assignment you have ever worked on, include the results of the assignment instead of how you actually achieved those results. Save all those details for the actual interview.

When you are summarizing your skills and career history, you should include a brief description of the position you held and the responsibilities you held in the position. When you are describing specific projects you worked on, also include a brief description but focus on the results of that project (an eye catcher is usually financial savings).

Also remember that if you are applying for different types of technology positions, you should customize your resume since each one will more than likely have unique job requirements. A few small revisions to your resume can impact whether or not you get called for an interview.
