Is Your Broadband Broad Enough?

Welcome to Just Ask Matt! – The IT industry’s answer to the help column, only slightly more medicated. Today, Mike writes:

My Internet access is via cable using a Motorola Surfboard Cable Modem. Unfortunately I do not have any facility to determine that my ISP is giving me what I am paying for with respect to wideband speed. Could you recommend anything? Thanks!

Well Mike, if I understand you correctly you are looking for a way to test your up/down speeds that your broadband ISP is offering to you. One test that I have used with some success is offered by broadbandreports.com. The test requires Java to run, but that is to be expected. For instance, my results are 3019 kbps download/ 137 kbps upload. Hope this helps.

Do you have an IT-related question? Perhaps you are just burnt out on writing on the walls with crayons? Whatever the comments may be, drop me a line and you, too, can “Just Ask Matt!”
