Welcome to Just Ask Matt! - The IT industry’s answer to the help column, only slightly more medicated. Today, Vic writes:
Hi, Matt! Just installed Service Pack 2. The security applet says my AVG anti-virus was out of date and turned it off. I have now updated AVG, but how do I get it to now recognize the update and turn it on? Sorry, kind of a newbie. Thanks!
Well, Vic, the most critical thing to remember is keeping the anti-virus up to date. From what I am reading, you have a handle on that. All that security thing really does for you is bug ya to keep the anti-virus updated. If for some reason it is not detecting that you have updated it, you might first try rebooting the PC. If this does not do it, and the security center still tells you that you need to update your virus database, then it may be something with AVG. Go into your AVG control panel and look at the left side where your virus database displays a date of release for you. If it is very recent, then I would not worry about - just keep it updated at least once a week. If it is showing up as outdated, then try updating again. If all else fails at this point, then you might consider switching to avast!, which happens to work really well with the Microsoft Security Center. Good luck!
Do you have an IT-related question? Perhaps you are just burnt out on writing on the walls with crayons? Whatever the comments may be, drop me a line and you, too, can “Just Ask Matt!”

Set Security Center to NOT MONITOR ANTI-VIRUS. Otherwise the nagware will drive you crazy.
