If you’re even reading this entry, then there’s a very good chance that your product or company Web site/s are of great importance to your business. And if your business is actually based online, then being able to rely on your Web site/s for publicity, information, e-mail and sales is of critical importance.

My own business is based in the UK. We have a partner with whom we share information in real time via e-mail, and we also make heavy use of our own in-house peer to peer database. We also have clients from all over the world, most of whom regularly contact us via e-mail.

So our Web site is the beating heart of our company, and we also offer an assortment of online tools, information and applications as a means of drawing in targeted traffic.

When our Web site goes down, our business is deaf, dumb, and blind. Not good.

We have backups, of course, but if it goes down, we need to know about it immediately. And even if it starts working a few minutes later, we need to keep track of this information.

For us, a basic level of “is the Web site accessible through the browser” isn’t enough. We need to know that the HTTP and RSS content is being delivered, that the e-mail server is working, that our forms are functioning as required, and more.

IPCheck Server Monitor 4 is one of the few applications that I class as essential to the running of our business.

The software helps organisations of any size monitor their critical network resources, and can immediately detect system failures or performance problems, and notify the appropriate people as required.

It offers reliable network and Web site monitoring, and with fast and easy installation, and an intuitive web based user interface, setting up and using the software really couldn’t be much simpler.

And take a look under the bonnet to see what the software is capable of.

It includes a range of sensor types including PING, PORT, HTTP, HTTPS, Advanced HTTP, HTTP Transaction, DNS, SMTP, POP3, and SNMP. If that isn’t enough, then custom sensors are also supported for in depth monitoring of almost any network device.

Notifications can be triggered by uptimes, downtimes, or slow responses, and can be sent out by e-mail, ICQ, via SMS, and also to pagers.

Of particular appeal to me (personally) is that at any time, I can log into the Web interface and see detailed uptime/downtime reports and easy-to-read graphs, all of which are in real time.

Further details of IPCheck Server Monitor are available from the Paessler Web site, and there’s also a freeware edition and a free trial of the full version available for download.
