Internet Connection Wizard Not Working?

Welcome to Just Ask Matt! - The IT industry’s answer to the help column, only slightly more medicated. Today, Jimmy writes:

Matt, I have tried everything to get my Internet Connection Wizard to work again. I try to run it from my IE browser and it will just not work. I keep getting a stupid error message telling me that the Wizard is just not there, anymore. Help me, please! I am on Windows 98.

Jimmy, if I am understanding you correctly, it sounds like the Internet Connection Wizard is giving you an error rather than coming up when you try to run it. While I cannot remember the exact error it gives you, I think I understand the problem you are having.

Basically, you have a couple of files that have become corrupt and need to be replaced. Follow these instructions and I am willing to bet you this will correct your problem.

  1. The first file that will need to be replaced is called Tapi32.dll, located in your \ windows \ system \ folder. The other problem file is most likely Icwhelp.dll, located in your \ Program files \ Internet Explorer \ Connection Wizard \ folder.
  2. You will need to go to the RUN box from your Start Menu and type sfc. From there you will select “extract one file from installation disk.” You will need to follow the extraction process outlined in this tutorial. The file backup copies from which you’ll extract are generally located in someplace like C:\Windows\Options\cabs.

Once the files have been extracted and replaced, you should be all set. Good luck!
