How to Upgrade to iOS 5 Right Now

With a planned official release of iOS 5 coming on October 12, Apple quietly released the Gold Master of the OS to developers after its presentation yesterday. This Gold Master build is the release that will be pushed to everyone next week, meaning that you can install it without an Apple developer account; all you need to do is download the software, restore using iTunes, and you’ll be all set with the brand new iOS 5!

If you are unfamiliar with manually restoring an iOS build to your device, follow along here to get your device upgraded.

How to Upgrade to iOS 5 Right NowMake a Backup

First things first, you’ll want to make a backup of your iOS 4 (or iOS 5 beta) installation, because this process will wipe your device. If you don’t have a backup, you’ll be starting from scratch. Sync your phone with iTunes and a backup will be automatically made, or you can right click on your device in the iTunes sidebar and select Back Up.

Download the Appropriate Software

Then, download the iOS 5 software and the newest iTunes beta. Here are the links for the different devices supported by iOS 5:

Download iOS 5 GM for iPhone 4 (GSM)
Download iOS 5 GM for iPhone 4 (CDMA)
Download iOS 5 GM for iPhone 3GS
Download iOS 5 GM for iPad 2 (Wi-Fi)
Download iOS 5 GM for iPad Wi-Fi + 3G (GSM)
Download iOS 5 GM for iPad Wi-Fi + 3G (CDMA)
Download iOS 5 GM for iPad 1
Download iOS 5 GM for iPod touch 4G
Download iOS 5 GM for iPod touch 3G

Download iTunes 10 Beta 7

Restore in iTunes

Next, load up iTunes and plug your device back in. Go to the main settings page for the device (click it in the sidebar) and you’ll see a button that says Restore. Hold down Option on Mac or Shift on PC and click the Restore button; you’ll be prompted to select the software to install. Navigate to the folder where you downloaded the OS software above, and select the IPSW file for installation.

You’re Almost Done!

Your device will turn off and the installation process will begin. Once that’s been completed, you’ll be walked through iOS 5′s new on-screen setup, which allows you to set up your device and restore the iTunes backup you just made. It’s that easy!

Hold down the menu and power buttons together for a few seconds, until the apple logo appears. A few seconds later you will get an option in iTunes to restore to the previous version.

That’s not true, they were working on beta 7. I’m not sure if it was the regular Gevey or the Turbo or the Ultra, but on beta 7 at least one type of Gevey WAS working.

Whether or not it works on this release of iOS5 though is not something I’m aware of yet.

ii) when you get to the passcode screen, hit cancel to go back. (If you aren’t prompted to enter your lock code, wait for longer than your Auto-Lock duration, then start back at (a).)

I got this for the 4th Gen iPod touch on Windows XP (I know, I’m ashamed, but I’m saving for a Mac). It’s working fine. If you get a direct IPSW instead of a .dmg, don’t freak out. It’s better than getting a .dmg because you don’t have to go through the trouble of extracting everything. A .dmg is kind of like an .iso. It’s basically a disc image. I even got a free @me account through iCloud. Extra bonus. Now you just have to figure out how to get the iCloud Control Panel on XP. *Maybe 3rd Party* Hmm….

  219. Guest says:

I backed up my phone while under iOS 4.3.1, then followed your steps to upgrade to iOS5.  However, when I tried to restore my information after the upgrade, iTunes said that my old backup data is corrupt.  Since then, I’ve lost all of my contact information and photos.  I am also having a hard time trying to downgrade to 4.3.3 as well when using TinyUmbrella and other tools.  I never had the issue of not being able to restore my data when upgrading firmware before, until iOS5.  Do you think that because I’m using a beta version of iTunes that it does not recognize the old backed up data?

  220. Tech Pepsi says:

this works but now I can not downgrade to 4.3.5

No. Even if it were, it would be like taking a leak in the woods – technically illegal, but who will know or care? Just don’t get any on ya.

Is this only for macs? I downloaded the software but cant open it on my windows computer,.

  225. Mike says:

I tried both downloading the file the changing the ext to .ipsw as well as extracting the .dmg then the 2.hfs

Both of them gave me the following error:

The iPod “iPod Name” could not be restored because the firmware is not compatible.

  226. Dwdlux says:

i did all the steps and extract the DMG file (the bigger file that’s about 760,000KB since there are 2) but then when i try to extract the DMG file again it says cannot be done

  227. Michaelm0377 says:

is this for a MAC only? I dl the ipad2 wifi file and it is a .dmg so how do I install it? I tried it once and it got an error and stated it needed to be restored back. Thanks
