Everything New from the Apple “Let’s Talk iPhone” Announcement

Posted by on Oct 4, 2011 | 10 Comments

Apple’s October 4th “Let’s Talk iPhone” announcement was largely underwhelming, focusing on recapping Apple’s market share in various areas and reminding you of all the features of iOS 5 at first, then launching into the new iPhone 4S, which features mostly incremental upgrades without any kind of new design. However, there was some cool new stuff sprinkled in there, so here’s what you missed if you couldn’t follow the announcement.

Everything New from the Apple iCards — Apple is releasing a new app that lets you create personalized greeting cards on your iPhone or iPad, and send them by email or by snail mail. Apple will print your card, put it in a nice envelope, mail it, and even let you know when your card will be delivered. It’s only going to cost $3.99 to send a card, so it looks like Apple is giving Hallmark a run for its money.

iOS5 & iCloud Release Date – We’ve been waiting for months for iOS 5 to come out, and it’s finally official. Apple will release iOS 5 to the public on October 12th, so get your iDevices ready for the upgrade because it’s coming soon. For a recap of iOS 5 features, check out our iOS5 tag page.

Find My Friends — Much like Google Latitude, you can have your friends opt in to share their location with you for a set period of time so you can easily locate them. This sounds like it will be an excellent tool for music festivals and other large events, as being able to see your friends on a map with GPS coordinates sounds a lot easier than the “I’m buy the hotdog stand near the main stage, come find me” method that we’ve been mostly using until this point.

Updated iPod nano OS — The iPod nano, while not redesigned completely, now has OS updates that make it easier to use, as well as a Nike+ chip built right in, making the nano a jogger’s best friend. There are also new clock face designs, so you can make your iPod nano into the classiest watch ever. There’s also a price drop on the iPod nano: $129 for 8 GB and $149 for 16 GB.

Same iPod touch, new colors and price — The iPod touch also saw a price drop, and is now $199 for 8 GB, $299 for 32 GB, and $399 for 64 GB. There’s also a white version available for the first time.

iPhone 4S – The new iPhone 4S has the same design as the iPhone 4, but all new insides including an A5 processor and new dual core graphics. This means that the CPU is up to twice as fast, and the graphics are “up to 7X faster,” according to Apple. The company has also improved the battery life, with six hours of browsing, 10 of video, and 40 hours of music.

The iPhone 4S also has an all-new camera, with an upgraded lens system with “30% more sharpness,” an f/2.4 aperture, and an 8 MP sensor. It also takes pictures much faster than comparable smartphones — Apple is claiming 1.1 seconds from opening the app to being able to take the first photo. In the video department, the phone shoots 1080p now, with video image stabilization and noise reduction.

Finally, the 4S is a world phone, meaning that it supports GSM and CDMA in one device. No more separate devices for AT&T and Verizon, we now have one iPhone 4S for all carriers. Pricing for the 4S is similar to the old iPhone 4 pricing: 16 GB for $199, 32 GB for $299, 64 GB for $399. Pre-orders for the 4S start this Friday, the 7th, and it will be available on October 14th.

Siri — Siri is Apple’s new voice control system available on the iPhone 4S. It’s “Your intelligent assistant that helps you get things done just by asking.” For example, you can load up Siri and talk into your phone “What is the weather going to be like today?” and your phone will pull up the weather, for instance. You can also do things like say “Wake me up at 6 AM,” and your phone will automatically set an alarm for the next morning at 6. While this is a cool idea in theory, do people really want to talk to their phones? There’s also voice dictation, meaning you can read out your text messages and your iPhone will type in what you’re saying.
